FUNCTIONAL FEATURES
Distributed Architecture Support
The module permits installation of remote I/O stations up to 7500 feet from the host controller, dramatically reducing wiring costs and allowing centralized control of geographically dispersed equipment. This capability is essential for large-scale industrial facilities such as power plants, water treatment facilities, and material handling systems .
High-Density I/O Management
Handles any combination of discrete and analog I/O, supporting up to 1024 discrete inputs and outputs or 64 analog input and output words per remote drop. This flexibility allows it to accommodate a wide variety of field devices and sensors within a single remote location .
Redundancy Support
The module supports both CPU and IC66 bus redundancy, ensuring system reliability for critical processes. It features dedicated IC66 Bus terminals that support redundant bus configurations, allowing operation to continue seamlessly in the event of a single bus failure .
Comprehensive Module Compatibility
Designed for use with IC697 modules, this scanner is compatible with a full range of I/O types within a remote drop:
-
Discrete Modules
-
Analog Modules and Analog Expander Modules
-
Bus Transmitter and Bus Receiver Modules
-
PCM (Processor Control Module) and ADS (Analog Data Sheet) Modules
The remote drop cannot contain modules dependent on COMREQ instructions, such as I/O module interrupts or communications modules .
Multi-Host Compatibility
Although ideally suited for IC697 PLC systems, the module functions with any PLC or computer capable of controlling an IC66 bus. Compatible hosts include:
Diagnostic and Configuration Tools
Provides a dedicated 9-pin port for connection to an IC66 Genius Hand-held Monitor (model IC660HHM501G, version 4.0 or later). Configuration can be performed using the Hand-held Monitor or via MS-DOS programming software configuration functions. The three LED indicators allow operators to quickly verify module status, bus activity, and I/O enable status .
System Flexibility
A single remote drop can consist of up to eight racks linked by Bus Transmitter and Bus Receiver modules. Both 5-slot and 9-slot IC697 racks are acceptable, with a maximum distance of 50 feet (15 meters) from the first rack to the last rack in the drop. The scanner itself resides in rack 0 of the drop .
APPLICATION SCENARIOS
Large-Scale Manufacturing Facilities
Ideal for automotive assembly plants, food processing lines, and packaging machinery where control cabinets are distributed across large production floors. The module enables centralized monitoring and control of I/O points located on different assembly stations or processing units without running massive home-run cable bundles back to a single cabinet .
Power Generation and Distribution
Used in power plants and electrical substations to monitor and control equipment spread across wide areas. The modules long-distance communication capability (up to 7500 feet) and support for redundant bus configurations make it suitable for critical infrastructure applications where reliability is paramount .
Water and Wastewater Treatment
Applied in treatment plants to control pumps, valves, and monitoring equipment distributed across settling tanks, filtration systems, and chemical dosing areas. The modules ability to handle analog I/O (up to 64 analog words) is particularly valuable for processing flow rates, pressure readings, and chemical concentration levels .
Material Handling and Logistics
Employed in baggage handling systems at airports, distribution center conveyors, and warehouse automation systems where I/O points are located along long conveyor lines or sorting systems. The daisy-chain bus topology simplifies wiring across extended distances .
Mining and Metals Processing
Suitable for mineral processing plants, steel mills, and cement factories where control equipment must be located in separate buildings or outdoor areas. The modules robust communication over shielded twisted pair cable provides noise immunity required for industrial environments with heavy electrical interference .
System Configuration Notes
The module requires the following minimum compatibility for operation: Hand Held Monitor version 4.0 or later, CPU firmware release 2.0 or later for IC697 systems, and MS-DOS programming software release 3.0 or later. For computer communications, a PCIM or QBIM card must be installed in the host computer . The total configuration data for all I/O modules in a remote drop cannot exceed 4500 bytes .
