Working Principle

Legacy serial industrial equipment transmits sensor, actuator, or machine status data via RS232/RS485 serial lines to the gateway’s isolated serial port. Internal microcontroller decodes incoming serial protocol frames, maps serial data values to user-configurable fieldbus memory registers, and transmits packaged register data onto the target industrial fieldbus network. Downstream fieldbus master controllers read mapped register data for automation control logic execution. Fieldbus command data from master controllers is reverse-translated to serial protocol frames and sent back to legacy serial equipment for actuator control signals. Isolation transformers separate serial and fieldbus electrical domains to block common-mode industrial noise.
