ZIEHL MSF-220-SE

Product Brief: Monitors up to two independent strings of PTC thermistors (DIN 44081/44082) embedded in motors, dry-type transformers, or bearings. If any PTC resistance exceeds the trip threshold (> 1,800 Ω typical, switching point < 4,000 Ω) the relay drops out and triggers alarm/shutdown. Includes power-on delay to suppress nuisance tripping when supply is applied (transformer secondary used as supply). Two independently configurable changeover relays for pre-alarm and trip/off functions.

Description
Working Principle: Applies a low measuring current through the PTC sensor chain; continuously monitors resistance. Below trip temperature the PTC remains low-ohmic (< 1,500 Ω typical) and relay K1/K2 are energized. Above trip temperature the PTC resistance rises sharply (> 1,800 Ω → opens circuit effectively at < 4,000 Ω switching point); relay de-energizes and signals overtemperature. Integrated timing relay K3 delays alarm evaluation for ~2–4 s after supply turn-on.
Rated Supply Voltage (Variant Dependent):
  • Type MSF220SE / T221697:AC/DC 90–240 V (AC 80–264 V, DC 80–297 V), < 2 VA
  • Type MSF220SE / T221696:AC/DC 24–240 V (AC 20–264 V, DC 21–297 V), < 2 VA
PTC Input:2 × independent PTC circuits, each accepting 1–6 PTC resistors in series per DIN 44081/44082
  • Max. cold resistance per circuit: ≤ 1,500 Ω
  • Switching / trip point: < 4,000 Ω (typical)
    Output Relays:
  • 2 × changeover contacts (CO / Form C)
  • Contact rating: typically 5 A / 250 V AC (resistive)
  • Relay 1 (K1) — often used for pre-alarm (yellow LED)
  • Relay 2 (K2) — often used for trip / disconnect (red LED)
Indicators: Green LED = supply ON; Yellow LED = Alarm 1 (pre-alarm); Red LED = Alarm 2 (trip)
Test Button: Manual TEST for Alarm 1 and Alarm 2 check
    Power-on Delay (K3):≈ 2–4 s suppression of alarm impulse at supply switch-on
    Ambient Temperature:–20 °C to +55 °C
    Dimensions (H × W × D):82 mm × 42 mm × 121 mm (design S12)
Mounting:35 mm DIN rail (EN 60715) or with M4 screws
Protection Degree: Housing IP40, Terminals IP20
    Weight:≈ 210 g
Standards: DIN 44081 / DIN 44082(PTC sensors), EN 60255(measuring relays), CE marked
Applicable Industries: Electric motor protection (pumps, fans, compressors), dry-type transformer winding overtemperature, bearing temperature monitoring in conveyors/extruders, HVAC large fan/motor protection
Installation Requirements: Mount on DIN rail inside motor control center or local panel; wire PTC sensor cables with separate shielding (ground shield at relay end only); ensure supply voltage matches nameplate; series-connect PTCs only — do NOT parallel PTC sensors.
Usage Notes: If using transformer secondary as supply, the built-in power-on delay prevents false trip before PTCs warm up; a failed/open PTC sensor (broken wire) is detected as overtemperature (relay drops out) — this is fail-safe by design; reset is automatic on temperature drop below reset hysteresis (~ 300–500 Ω below trip point); periodically test with front-panel TEST button during maintenance rounds.
