Foxboro P0916AC Analog Input Module

Model Series: P09 Series — I/A Series Analog Input
Manufacturer: Foxboro (Schneider Electric / Invensys)

Product Overview:
The P0916AC is a 16-channel analog input module for the Foxboro I/A Series DCS. It accepts 4–20 mA, 4-wire signals from field transmitters. The “AC” variant is configured for 4-wire transmitters where loop power is supplied externally, allowing higher accuracy and isolation from the module’s internal power supply.

Structural Features:

  • Plug-in module for I/A Series I/O carrier
  • 16 screw-clamp terminal blocks with channel ID labels
  • Per-channel LED status indicators (OK, Fault, Communication)
  • Backplane connector for I/A Series carrier bus
  • Higher CMRR than AA variant due to 4-wire isolation architecture

Functional Features:

  • 4-wire configuration provides superior accuracy vs. 2-wire (AA variant)
  • ±0.075% accuracy — higher precision than P0916AA
  • Per-channel programmable damping, range, and filtering
  • Fail-safe options: Hold Last, Substitute Value, Zero, High
  • HART 5/7 transparent pass-through

Working Principle:
The 4-wire configuration separates the signal current path from the power supply path. The 100 Ω burden resistor converts 4–20 mA to 0.4–2.0 VDC. A 16-bit A/D converter digitizes the signal with higher precision due to reduced self-heating effects in the burden resistor. Digital data is sent to the I/A Series controller at 10 Hz. HART signals pass transparently through the module.

Advantage Highlights:

  • ±0.075% accuracy — highest in the P0916 family
  • 4-wire architecture eliminates self-heating errors in burden resistor
  • >130 dB CMRR provides excellent noise rejection
  • HART pass-through for full smart transmitter diagnostics
  • 16 channels in single slot — maximum carrier density

Applicable Industries:
Oil & Gas (Custody Transfer), Chemical, Power Generation, Pharmaceuticals, Precision Manufacturing

Installation Requirements:

  • Install in I/A Series I/O carrier slot
  • Use shielded twisted-pair cable; ground shield at control room end
  • External loop power supply required (24 VDC, 500 mA per channel minimum)
  • Configure per-channel parameters in I/A Series control software
  • Perform zero calibration with no signal applied (0 mA)

Usage Precautions:

  • External power supply is mandatory — do not use 2-wire configuration
  • Do not exceed 600 Ω total loop resistance (including external wiring)
  • Do not apply voltage to input terminals
  • Verify HART communication for each connected smart transmitter
  • Recalibrate at 12-month intervals for custody transfer applications
